MOSQUITO
NET HISTORY:
The MOSQUITO NET was founded more than 12 years
ago by Carol and Jose Ramos (KC4VIN and KC4VIO) as members of the Titusville
Amateur Radio Club to promote use of the 10 meter amateur spectrum, promote
goodwill in the amateur community, create a
fun place to gather and ragchew about local happenings and to have a
group of amateurs ready to monitor and
participate in 10 meter emergency communications should the need arise.
The net grew and began to experience checkins from
all over the world. Carol’s original idea was to issue a “Stinger Number” to
all loyal checkins and the current list of numbers includes more than 800
numbers issued to date. The net was turned over to me W4TAT in June of 2003 and
I am doing my best to promote it and grow it in a way that will keep it
flourishing in the future.
If you’d like to earn a “Stinger Number” just
check in a minimum of 3 times and send an SASE to me and you will be issued a
handsome certificate and your very own “Stinger Number” which remains yours for
life! This number can be used on the Mosquito net to work towards the awards
program that is being developed currently!
We start the net every Wednesday evening on 28.333
mhz, at 7:00 PM Eastern Standard Time. We’ll devote the first half hour or so
to gathering a list of checkins, along with their “Stinger Numbers”, “10-10
Numbers” etc.. We invite everyone to say a word to the net and to let Net
Control know if you have any traffic to pass for the net. Traffic would include
any info local or otherwise that may be of
Interest to the net. We then go down the list station by station in the
order of check in and will allow stations to make 3 attempts for 2 calls to any
other stations on the list, exchanging signal reports and “Stinger Numbers”
and/or “10-10 numbers. These exchanges may be logged and will be valid
exchanges for the awards available on the Mosquito Net.
Please check the awards info page for any
requirements relating to each specific award. Net control or the designated
relays can assist stations in exchanging call signs ONLY! And cannot assist in
relaying numbers or signal reports. Thanks for your participation and together
we can make the net a great experience for all participants!
Thanks and 73, Bob
